As Smartsheet experienced rapid growth, its public website had evolved quickly to support changing marketing and business needs. While functional, years of incremental development had introduced architectural inconsistencies and technical debt that made the platform increasingly difficult to maintain.

One particularly challenging issue involved presentation logic that had been implemented directly within Drupal Blocks rather than the theme layer. CSS, styling behavior, and other frontend concerns had become intertwined with content, making updates difficult and increasing the complexity of future development.

At the same time, the company was preparing for a future migration to Drupal 7 while continuing to deliver new features and support an expanding international audience.

I worked with the web development and design teams to improve the maintainability of the platform while continuing to support ongoing business initiatives.

A significant portion of the engagement focused on identifying architectural issues, separating presentation concerns from content management, and restructuring frontend components to better align with Drupal best practices. This reduced technical debt and created a cleaner foundation for future development.

I also contributed to planning and implementing the organization's transition toward Drupal 7, including improvements to multilingual support and internationalization that better supported Smartsheet's growing global presence.

Working closely with designers, I implemented several innovative user interface concepts that leveraged emerging CSS3 capabilities—including transforms and three-dimensional visual effects—to create engaging user experiences while maintaining cross-browser compatibility.

Helped transform Smartsheet's public web platform into a more maintainable, scalable foundation capable of supporting continued business growth. By reducing technical debt, improving frontend architecture, enhancing multilingual capabilities, and preparing the site for its future Drupal 7 migration, the project positioned the platform for ongoing modernization while enabling the organization to continue delivering new digital experiences.
