Why I use it

Every organization has its own technology standards. I don't get attached to specific tools if another solution better fits the environment. Podman demonstrated that once you understand containerization, moving between Docker and Podman is largely a matter of adapting your workflow rather than relearning the technology.

How I use it

Podman provides many of the same containerization capabilities as Docker while emphasizing security and compatibility with enterprise Linux distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Because it operates without a centralized daemon, it is often favored in environments with stricter security requirements.

While working at Caltrans, Podman became the preferred container platform because the development environment was based on RHEL. I used it to containerize local Drupal development environments, making them portable and easier to reproduce despite differences between developer workstations. Although my personal preference remains Docker and DDEV, working with Podman reinforced that the underlying concepts of containerization are far more important than any particular implementation.

For clients, Podman offers an enterprise-ready approach to containerized development while remaining compatible with many existing container workflows.
